SRMC looking for teen volunteers

SALEM -- Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) invites local teens to participate in a rewarding and worthwhile volunteer experience from June 4 to Aug. 17. Area high school students ages 16 through college graduation are invited to apply for the SRMC teen volunteer program.

According to Amy Reed, director of development at SRMC, volunteering in this program gives students a unique opportunity to acquire non-clinical experience in a hospital environment while gaining the personal satisfaction of helping others in their community. "SRMC is excited to offer our teen volunteer program again this year, and the students selected will obtain valuable hands on experience for their future career and life paths," she said.

During the summer program, students are asked to donate a minimum of 40 service hours. After the completion of each 20 hours of volunteer time, the student will be eligible to shadow an SRMC staff member/clinical professional. Only students that volunteer as part of the summer teen program will be eligible to continue volunteering throughout the school calendar year.

To participate, students are required to submit an application and a letter of recommendation, complete an onsite interview and attend an orientation class by May 7. Applications for the SRMC teen volunteer program are available by emailing your request to volunteerservices@salemregional.com or stopping by the Development Department office located at 1995 E. Garden program for kids planned

YOUNGSTOWN -- Good Natured Garden Partners (GNGP) plan to kick off summer programs in Mahoning County. With the GNGP program, Ohio State University Extension aims to teach children all about gardening and how their food is produced. Participation in the program is based off of a team structure. A "Growing Team" may be formed by any group of children and must be led by an adult volunteer(s). The adult volunteer will fill out a volunteer form in order to receive free seeds and plants for their group, which will then plant a garden and compete for prizes and recognition at the end of summer. Teams are responsible for finding their own garden plot or container garden.

Throughout the summer, teams will attend the gardening kick-off event May 28 and are required to attend at least two other gardening events. A garden party on Aug. 13 will wrap up the summer with fellowship, fun and a chance to win prizes for best garden displays, garden harvest and more. Youth who participate will end the summer with a greater understanding of plant production, a growth in teamwork skills and an appreciation for seeing a project through. The registration deadline is May 18. For information or to register call the Mahoning County extension office at 330-533-5538 or visit go.osu.edu/GNGP2018.
